MyVoterInfo

An app that tackles deregistration and absentee/early voting access by allowing users to check for their voter registration status as well as nearby ballot drop-off boxes, early voting locations, and polling locations.

šŸ„‡Overall Winner, Overall Most Impactful Winner, and Political Awareness Track Winner @JumboHacks 2024

CONTEXT

I worked as the only Product Designer with 3 software engineers on this project for Tufts JumboHacks Hackathon. With the time limit, we decided that the engineers will set up their environment while I start designing the screens. We decided to use the design system, Tamagui, to streamline the design to implementation process.

IDEATION

With only 27 hours to complete this project; my 3 computer science friends and I needed to move fast. We looked at the tracks available (education, sustainability, politcal awareness, racial advocacy, and general), and brainstormed some spaces we want to narrow into and specific frustrations we see in the world. We finally landed on the issue of Voter Suppression because one of our teammates' friends' experience of voter suppression.

THEĀ PROBLEM

1. Registration. Tens to hundreds of thousands of voters are deregistered due to reasons such as inactivity. Oftentimes they are unaware of this until Election Day, when it is too late to re-register.
2. Absentee or early voting access. There are numerous deadlines and different locations and drop-off hours, which is difficult for users to navigate. There are many hoops to jump through: application deadlines to register for primaries and general election, then to finally ,actually vote early.

THEĀ SOLUTION

An app where...
1. You get notified if you have been taken off the registration list
2. (If you are registered to vote) A registration page that displays your current voting/registration status, current elected officials and running candidates, and nearest polling station
3. (If you are NOT registered to vote) A registration page with a button that redirects the user to the registration website of their designated state
4. An interactive map that displays all the locations to ballot-box locations, drop-off locations, and more for elections.

FINAL UI AND BUILD

Using Tamagui Design System, I created these screens based on the required features, the inputs needed, and some research of the current government website.

LEARNINGS

In this intense 27-hour sprint to develop MyVoterInfo, I learned to ideate, collaborate, and problem-solve with time restriction. Our team's decision to tackle voter suppression was rooted in empathy, sparked by a personal connection to the issue. Throughout the project, I practiced my skills in user research, interface design, and prototyping, working closely with my computer science teammates to bring our ideas to life. Despite the time constraints, we managed to create a functional app that addresses crucial aspects of voter registration and access to voting information.
